About the building
The Hogg & Mitchell’s building has been listed by the Environment Agency because of its significance to the industrial heritage of the city and because of its architectural significance.
It was constructed in 1898 by David Hogg and Charles Mitchell as a shirt factory and to celebrate the opening, a specially chartered steamer was hired to bring over guests from England.
The building was designed by architect WA Barker and it operated as a shirt factory until the 1970’s
Hogg & Mitchell founded the “Old England Brand” line of shirts and became the de facto supplier to the British Army during the Boer War. After a restructuring of the company the Old England Brand became Peter England which is still sold globally.
The building was converted into apartments in 2000 by the current owners and the design was the winner of the architectural conservation and design award in 2001.
The building has recently been refurbished to also provide short stay accommodation.
